Second World War

Second World War

Fought between 1939-45, the Second World War involved the majority of the world’s nations formed into two opposing military alliances (Allies and Axis). Thus a state of total war emerged with more than 100 million people from 30 countries engaged. The major participants (United States, Great Britain and the Soviet Union verses Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy and Imperial Japan) threw their entire economic, industrial and scientific capabilities behind their respective war efforts whilst blurring distinctions between civil and military resources. Still considered the deadliest conflict in human history, some 70 to 85 million fatalities, most of whom were civilians in the Soviet Union and China, it was marked by wholesale massacres, racial genocide, premeditated death by disease and starvation, strategic bombing and the only use of nuclear weapons in warfare.
