First World War

First World War

Fought between 1914-18, the First World War introduced new and deadly military technologies such as poison gas, tanks, aircraft, submarines and the myriad horrors of trench warfare. Great campaigns such as the Marne, Verdun, Somme and Ypres in the West and Tannenberg, Przemysl, Gorlice-Tarnow and Brusilov Offensive in the East, resulted in unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. Outlying campaigns, primarily fought against Imperial Germany’s overseas possessions and Ottoman Turkey occurred in China, Africa and the Middle East. The consequent Russian Revolution and United States entry into the war during 1917 were seminal events that still impact the world today. By the time Imperial Germany requested an armistice in autumn 1918, more than 15 million people—soldiers and civilians alike—were dead.
