Early 20th Century

Early 20th Century

Warfare during the period 1899-14 was characterised by the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), Russo-Japanese War (1904-05), Balkan Wars (1912-13) and lesser known colonial empire conflicts in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Meantime, new and improved weapons such as machine-guns, magazine rifles, breech loading artillery and dreadnoughts produced during the latter stages of Industrial Revolution heightened existing tensions in Europe as nations strove to outpace perceived enemies technologically. This armaments race accelerated in the decade prior to 1914 as the Triple Alliance of Imperial Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy squared off against the Triple Entente of Imperial Russia, Republican France and Great Britain. Germany’s fear of Russian armament increases and British fears of an ongoing German naval build-up, contributed to the outbreak of the First World War.
