16th Century

16th Century

The 16th century acts as a bridge between the Late Medieval era and the start of the Early Modern period of the 17th century. By 1500, the Renaissance, the age of European advances in the arts and sciences, was in full swing. Catholic dominance was challenged by the rise of the new Protestant religions, and Western Europe was itself challenged by the rise of the Ottoman Empire. The New World has been discovered just before the start of the century and already Spain and Portugal were becoming increasingly rich and powerful as they raced to exploit the new lands. The use of gunpowder and artillery played an ever-increasing role in war, and this was coupled with the rise of the professional soldier. The Condotierri, Landsknecht and Janissary were all to march across the battlefields of Europe and beyond. Army organisation also changed. The start of the century saw armies still based around the retinue of the medieval era, but as increasing numbers of firearms were used on the battlefield, new tactics and formations saw the introduction of new military terms, such as ‘battagliones’ and ‘régiments’
