When the Second World War erupted, Latin America - despite being initially neutral - became part of it. Brazil, with its large provision of goods to the Allied Powers, was soon a victim of the Axis submarines - leading to the urgent development of an anti-submarine aviation arm. As it was developed, it also sent a fighter squadron and an observation unit to the Mediterranean Front - taking part in the operations over Northern Italy and supporting the Brazilian ground forces, as well as other Allied units, until the end of the war. This book covers the story of both the operations along the Brazilian coasts and on Italy and contains a large volume of information that is not been published in English before, including many photographs, and colour profiles of the aircraft.

"The author performs a very creditable job…….In addition to the text, Rivas includes an abundance of black and white photographs. The middle section of eight pages, numbered separately, showcases color aircraft profiles, BAF emblems, two color maps, and two pages of color photos. Overall, the layout and design won't win any awards for visual appeal, but everything looks agreeably neat and clean and legible. Readers will find here just about everything there is to know concerning the subject." Stone & Stone

"Rivas is a freelance writer from Brazil specializing in aviation and defense matters and focuses on Latin American aviation. His attention to the subject shows in the wealth of information in what is a short book. The book is full of photographs (some color) and has a section of beautiful color plates of the various aircraft flown by the FAB during the war. The book’s greatest strength is the obvious effort Rivas took in collecting and preparing his information. He draws from official sources and intersperses frequent personal anecdotes from pilots to support the narrative making it more immediate and compelling." Air Power History
