Information for entrants

Helion & Company, in association with the Western Front Association, are delighted to announce a series of prizes recognising First World War scholarship. The following information is to assist potential entrants. For clarification or further information please do not hesitate to contact us via info@helion.co.uk or by calling 0121 705 3393.

1. The Prizes
1.1 Three prizes will be awarded. Entrants can submit proposals into one of three categories:
    • The Edmonds Prize – for a proposal based on a PhD.
    • The Holmes Prize – for a proposal based on an MA.
    • The Terraine Prize – for a proposal based on private research.

1.2 Entrants can submit a proposal for only one of the above prizes.

1.3 The recipient of The Edmonds Prize will be awarded the following:
    • A cash sum of £TBC, to be paid by 1 December 2018.
    • A publishing contract with Helion & Company Limited, to be signed by 1 December 2018.
    • A bronze figurine, to be presented at the awards ceremony to be held in November 2018.

1.4 The recipient of The Holmes Prize will be awarded the following:
    • A cash sum of £TBC, to be paid by 1 December 2018.
    • A publishing contract with Helion & Company Limited, to be signed by 1 December 2018.
    • A bronze figurine, to be presented at the awards ceremony to be held in November 2018.

1.5 The recipient of The Terraine Prize will be awarded the following:
    • A cash sum of £TBC, to be paid by 1 December 2018.
    • A publishing contract with Helion & Company Limited, to be signed by 1 December 2018.
    • A bronze figurine, to be presented at the awards ceremony to be held in November 2018.

1.6 Acceptance of the cash sum constitutes an agreement to publish the submitted proposal with Helion on the part of the prize winner.

2. Distinctions
2.1 The organisers reserve the right to award an unspecified number of Distinctions for entries which the panel felt merited publication etc but which did not win named prizes. A recipient of a Distinction will be awarded the following:
    • A cash sum of £300, to be paid by 1 December 2018.
    • A publishing contract with Helion & Company Limited, to be signed by 1 December 2018.
    • A certificate.

3. Eligibility of Entries
To be eligible to enter the following criteria must be fulfilled:

3.1 The proposal is within the field of military history relating to the First World War, but not theatre- or nationality-specific.

3.2 Material should be submitted in English – both the proposal accompanying the entry and any subsequent submission of written material, including final manuscript.

3.3 Material should be substantially unpublished. Submissions which have already partly seen the light of day as journal articles etc are acceptable, dependent on context.

3.4 Both PhDs and MAs can have been awarded in the past, i.e. they do not need to date specifically from the year in which the award is to be given.

4. Awards Ceremony

4.1 There will be an awards evening held in November 2018 at the Oriental Club, Stratford Place, London W1C 1ES – exact date to be confirmed. Recipients of the prizes, and winners of distinctions, will be invited to attend with a guest.

5. Submission of Entries

5.1 All entries must be submitted using the downloadable form.

5.2 The organisers reserve the right to request further material from entrants to enable them to reach a decision regarding award eligibility.

5.3 The closing date for the 2017/18 prizes is 31 August 2018. Entries received after this date will be considered for the 2019/2020 prizes.

In all cases the panel’s decisions are final.
